After a few days in Shimla I took yet another night bus to get to Manali from where buses/ jeeps leave for Ladakh. Again I met a Danish couple who were really nice and also wanted to go to Leh. So we spent a day in Manali together which is really different than Shimla, lots of construction going on and not so clean or planned at all. But we had a nice guest house on the edge of town, with an attached apple orchard and I had a lovely view towards the mountains. We also went to a wooden temple nearby and it had an attached "amusment park" - must have been geared towards Indian families, with a few rides and you could also ride a Yak or get pictures with an angora bunny in your arm. Hmmm... We had to make our travel arrangements, originally I was going to take the bus but after all the bus rides decided to share a car & driver with the others, so a bit of luxury - it was a good idea as the 2 day ride really is not that comfortable. We left 6 the next morning and drove 13 hours (250km) to a tent camp half way where we slept. The roads are pretty shabby, mainly dirt treks but sometimes really good asphalt roads but still the going is slow. The scenery changed along the way from lush green to desert. We found some of the road signs very amusing, here a few of my favourites:
Driving fast is a thrill but will always kill
The curves are soft the edges sharp watch out so you won't be playing harp
After drinking Whisky driving is risky
Better be Mr gentle than Mr late
don't drive gama in the land of the lama
This first day we crossed two high passes (4800m) and slept at 4500 m. I felt the altitude a bit (feeling dizzy) but Nikolas, the Danish guy really did not feel well with headaches etc. Not much you can do but drink lots of water... At the tent camp they cooked us dinner in the "restaurant tent" - sounds fancy but really it was only a tent, with a stove and a few chairs, we had rice and lentils... Anyways, next day we went on - the road was actually better so we were fairly quick (8 hours only) and the scenery was spectacular. We also crossed the highest pass on the road, 5300 m! Going down from there towards Leh we went through a few villages and it does look completely different - this is what I imagined Tibet to look like. In my travel guide they call Ladakh little Tibet as it has the same culture and religion as well.

Hi Sandra!I am Iban, the basque guy you met in Asia Guest House. I arrived yesterday to Vashist and this looks really nice. The one day mini bus from Leh was long (17 hours), and in a certain point a bit dangerous. There was an only driver that after 12 or 13 hours started falling asleep so we had to tell him to stop. After a while we continued but everybody was a bit scared and tried to make some noise and offered him water and other things to keep him awake.
Finally we arrived with no more problems but I dont know if I would repeat the experience!
Hope you got people for the trek you were looking for.
I was pleased to meet you.
Have a very nice trip!
